Comedy wasn’t king at the box office last weekend as the newcomer Dinner for Schmucks couldn’t take the #1 spot away from Inception which in its third week of release is still bringing movie fans everywhere. This weekend, we have a diverse field of new movies opening, and among them is another high-profile comedy that’s gonna try to become the top film in America.
The comedy we’re talking about is called The Other Guys, and it stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. The Other Guys is a bit of a ridiculous film, the way a lot of Will Ferrell comedies are, and it’s a parody of the buddy-style cop movies that we’ve all seen over the years. It’s got a great cast with supporting roles handled by the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes, but the real story behind The Other Guys is that it’s another pairing of Will Ferrell and his long-time collaborator, Adam McKay.
Adam McKay is an important player for Will Ferrel as Adam was the writer and the director of Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers. Those three movies are among the most popular and the funniest projects of Will Ferrell’s film career, so you can see the importance and the influence of his partnership with Adam McKay. The two of them actually worked together on “Saturday Night Live,” and in fact Adam McKay created a number of the short films that had been featured on SNL in the late 90s and early 2000s.
As we mentioned, for The Other Guys, they take on the police force movie genre, and they do find plenty of funny material in the story of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as mismatched partners trying hard to be hero cops. It’s got some action sequences, but it’s got some good laughs too, and we’ll have wait and to see if The Other Guys does what Dinner for Schmucks couldn’t do and become the weekend’s #1 movie… maybe Adam McKay’s golden touch will take it to the top.
