Reelz Report Online-Weekend of July 17-18, 2010

It’s been a busy summer at Cineplexes everywhere and, as you might expect, while school’s are out and families are on vacation, kid-friendly movies and teen dramas have really dominated the box office of late.

Toy Story, Twilight, Karate Kid and now Despicable Me have all done very well… even The Last Airbender crossed the hundred million dollar mark in just two weeks of release.    But this weekend at the movies, it’s time to give the popcorn a rest and wake up your brain power to see if you can wrap your head around the latest offering from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan.

Chris nolan has become well-known recently as the director of the last couple of Batman films including The Dark Knight, but his real breakthrough in Hollywood came ten years ago with the arrival the Oscar-nominated film Memento.   Memento is a mind-bending movie about a man with memory loss where much of the action takes place backwards.   It’s the kind of movie that you have to see more than once to really get, and his new film called Inception just might fall into the same category.

In Inception, Leonardo DiCaprio plays a master thief whose skill is the ability to enter your dreams and steal valuable secrets from your subconscious.    They call that practice “extraction,” but in the movie, Leo’s big challenge is not stealing an idea, but planting one.   Confused yet?   Don’t worry, even the cast of Inception had a hard time understanding exactly what was going on in the script of Inception when they read it, but they trusted Christopher Nolan to get it right, and he absolutely does.    If you’d like to see what a master of modern cinema can do, get out and see Inception which is open now.
