As expected, the new Twilight film took a big bite out of the box office last weekend, plus, The Last Airbender and other top movies all did well over the long holiday weekend. This week, several new films arrive at the Cineplex, including the sci-fi thriller Predators, and a new animated film called Despicable Me, but we’d like to take a peek around to the corner to a film opening a few days from now.
We’re talking about The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and it’s a chance for us to catch up on the life and times of its star, Nicolas Cage. Nic Cage started appearing in films in the early 80s and he’s done a wide variety of films over the years, many of them with very dark themes. He’s a 2-time Oscar nominee and he won a gold statue for his role in Leaving Las Vegas. By far, his biggest financial success came with the National Treasure franchise, but his various successes led to personal problems, including multiple lawsuits having to do with his real estate holdings, and, he’s also had some trouble with the I.R.S. Movie-wise, even though Nicolas Cage has done some lighter fare over the years, he’s never really done something geared for the family, and the PG-rated Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a big move for him and possibly a smart one.
Well Cage may be coming off of some financial troubles, but he’s still still one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood… this coming week, as you just heard, he has his efforts going into a family-oriented film, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from the Walt Disney studio.
