Reelz Report Online-Weekend of February 27-28, 2010

Well, we are one week away from the annual Academy Awards telecast, so we figured this is a good time to recap the latest Oscar buzz and talk about what might happen on Oscar night.

In the best actor and best actress categories, we just might see the awards go to two very popular American stars who have both never won Oscars in the past.    Among the leading men, watch for Jeff Bridges to possibly take home the big award.   This is Jeff’s fifth Oscar nomination… he’s never won, he’s part of a legendary Hollywood family, his role in Crazy Heart is a sentimental favorite, and he’s already won the Golden Globe and SAG awards for this part.

Among the leading ladies, you might want to watch out for Oscar night to be a big one for Sandra Bullock.   The Blind Side was a big movie and Sandra Bullock is very popular in Hollywood.   Still, she’s up against Meryl Streep who’s been nominated 16 times for an Oscar, but hasn’t won one since 1983.   If “Old Hollywood” votes for Meryl Streep, that just might pull the rug out from under Sandra Bullock on Oscar night.

And then there’s the best picture battle.    Certainly Avatar has become the biggest blockbuster ever at the box office, and it deserves lots of technical awards, but don’t be surprised to see the best picture category go to another film, possibly The Hurt Locker.    Ironically, Avatar and The Hurt Locker are the respective creations of a former husband and wife… James Cameron delivering Avatar, and his ex, Katherine Bigelow bringing us The Hurt Locker.   Now that’s some drama that not even Hollywood writers could think up.    Of course this is first time in years that there are ten nominees for best picture, so that could throw the whole system out of whack.

No matter what happens, Oscar night March 7th is a big night in Hollywood, and it should be a fun show with co-hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.
