Reelz Report Online-Weekend of January 29-30, 2010

This past weekend fantasy films once again dominated cineplexes with the top three movies of the week being Avatar, Legion and The Book of Eli. This weekend, for the first time since before Christmas, we have a major romantic comedy opening, and it’s called When In Rome.

When In Rome is the story of a young woman from New York who’s a bit of a workaholic and not too lucky in love, but she finds herself pursued all over rome by a series of guys doing ridiculous things. The lead is played by Kristen Bell, and even though Kristen Bell first became famous through the teen drama “Veronica Mars,” she’s become quite the little queen of comedy. Her last two big time comedies, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Couples Retreat, did a combined 170 million dollars at the U.S. box office, and even though those movies were ensemble comedies, Kristen Bell delivered solid performances in those comedies.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
was an R-rated comedy, and that’s kind of a trend these days for contemporary comedies. Even the current Meryl Streep-Alec Baldwin comedy, It’s Complicated, has an R-rating, so it seems that raunchy humor is here to stay on the big screen. Meanwhile, When In Rome is a PG-13 film, and the producers of this movie are really going for the date-night crowd with this one.

As we said, Kristen Bell is the cutie in the lead role, and the eye-candy for the girls in this movie is Josh Duhamel and there’s a high-profile supporting cast as well. So if you’ve got a date night in your near future and you’re looking for a light-hearted comedy with a little Italian flair, when in rome is at theaters everywhere this weekend.
