Report Online-Weekend of January 21-22, 2012

Well, if we started talking about vampires versus werewolves, your mind would probably leap to the Twilight movies. But, there’s another world outside of Forks, Washington, where those two supernatural species collide, and that’s in the Underworld

For those keeping score, the first Underworld movie actually goes back to 2003, two years before the first Twilight novel was even published.   That aside, the new fourth film in the series, Underworld: Awakening, opened this weekend, and it continues the drama established up by the first two films in this series.   It also fully brings back Kate Beckinsale in the lead role of Selene… the last movie, Underworld: Rise of The Lycans, was actually a prequel that handled the characters differently, and some fans found that film a little less authentic as a result. That prequel was also not directed by Len Wiseman who was the creator of the original Underworld movie.  Wiseman, who actually married Kate Beckinsale after they met on the first movie in this series, was only slightly involved in Rise of The Lycans, mostly because he created the characters and their back-story. On this new one, he’s still not back in the director’s chair, but he did get a screenwriting credit, and his re-involvement adds to the pedigree of this 4th film in the franchise.

As for the plot, in this new Underworld film, vampire Kate Beckinsale must battle humans for existence.   Also, for the first time in this series, the action is available in 3-D, so the visuals are impressive, plus Underworld: Awakening also introduces us to some new characters as well.

Overall, if you’re a fan of the previous films in this series, or a fan of fantasy-horror, you should make a note that Underworld: Awakening is out right now.
